Employee Award Winners Announced

A Busy Summer Brings Fantastic Employee Efforts

Across what has been a busy summer for all of our Shield Group divisions, we have received a bumper number of nominations for both our Employee of the Month and Ian Story Health & Safety Champion awards.

Here are our Employee of the Month Award winners:

  • May – Joanne Love
  • June – Cameron Underwood
  • July – Alex Lai
  • August – Harry Green

Joanne was nominated by Group SHEQ Director, Helen Barrett, who had this to say, “We have had some changes in the SHEQ team within the last 8 months and Joanne has adapted and taken on anything that she can to support the team. She has taken on the group accreditations and audits and is taking them in her stride. Recently we had the ROSPA Gold submission, which is our Health and Safety award for Shield Environmental, where we can share all the positive things that we have done in 2023. Joanne has been working hard collating all the evidence to submit, with the support of Will and Anthony. It’s been a mammoth task and the criteria for each question are really strict on uploads, word count etc. This award is focused on the processes we have in place and the great practices that the site guys adhere to every day. We have now achieved GOLD, for the 9th continuous year! – thank you for your hard work Jo, it’s really appreciated.”

Cameron, from our Asbestos Services Birmingham branch, was nominated by Dean Humphreys, our Technical Director, following an HSE inspection at site.  Dean commented, “On the 31st of May, we had an HSE inspector visit the site that Cameron was managing. In my conversations with the inspector following the visit, they were very complimentary of how Cameron managed the site and presented himself, the inspector could tell the site was well run and organised. This level of recognition from an inspector should always be celebrated and the control and management implemented on the site are a positive reflection of the efforts Cam and the Branch have gone to in running these works.”

Alex Lai from our Shield Mechanical, Electrical & Facilities Services division was nominated by his colleague, Katie Latham, who provided this praise, “Since Alex started with us in May/June he has been AMAZING! He definitely entered in the deep end by looking after all of the M4 and London sites (and working alongside me lol) and has smashed it ever since. In challenging situations, he always finds a resolution and our customers love his transparency and how well he communicates with them. If I ever need help he will always drop everything he is doing to assist me. All the other helpdesk girls sing his praises every day for the help and effort he puts in. So Thank you for everything and keep smashing it.”

Our final winner is Harry Green from our Shield Mechanical, Electrical & Facilities division.  Harry was nominated by Leigh Jackson from our HR team, who had this to say, “I have been extremely impressed by Harry’s “can do” attitude, as he is always so proactive and an asset to SME&FS.  He carries out appraisals and probation reviews with constructive feedback, precision and always in a timely manner. He always sees potential in those who need a little helping hand and has the patience of a saint. He looks for ways to improve employees’ morale and is always approachable. Thanks for making my job slightly easier Harry! Keep up the good work.”

Our Ian Story Health & Safety Champion for August is Jordan Knight from our Shield Scaffolding Services division.  SHEQ team member Anthony Houghton nominated Jordan for his work on an important project for one of our key main contractors.  Anthony had this to say, “I would like to nominate Jordan Knight as this month he has won a monthly Health and Safety award from Kier Group at MOD Lyneham. Not only is Jordan well respected in scaffolding for having an excellent track record in safe working practices and attitude, but this is the second time that he has been recognised by Kier for his health and safety performance on two different projects. We are very proud of his efforts and grateful for how his day-to-day excellence reflects on Shield and our reputation with a tier-one contractor and important customer to the wider Shield group.”

Luke House, Shield Services Group Chairman, reflected on all of the nominees and winners, “More great nominations over what has been a really busy summer for our Group and its divisions.  Congratulations to all of the nominees and winners, you are all doing a brilliant job and representing Shield fantastically!
