Shield Marine supported the main contractor with the RFA Argus refit and provided various skilled personnel including insulation operatives, marine joiners and specialist engineers.
Shield Marine were involved in the project from the start, we fitted lead lined panels within the scanner room, upgraded the engine insulation and installed resin decks. We were generally on hand to assist all contractors in the provision of access into areas for all of the works.
During the contract it was necessary for us to work long hours, sometimes through the night. We were able to maintain this level of work and keep the appropriate number of operatives by utilising our various branches nationwide ensuring our support was resourced to the client’s requirements.
The project was successfully completed and the Argus then sailed for re-storing in Plymouth following extensive sea trials where all newly fitted and upgraded equipment was put through its paces.
The main role of the RFA Argus is to provide support to other naval ships and serve primarily as a Casualty Receiving Ship (PCRS). The ship is equipped with a 100 bed Hospital offering associated medical practices as well as a four bay Operation Theatre, 10 bed Critical Care Unit, 20 bed High Dependency Unit and a CT scanner.
