project brief

Over the years, Shield has undertaken numerous asbestos encapsulation and removal projects at Bournemouth International Airport, both directly for Manchester Airport Group and through third parties.

Both air side and land side works have been completed. Works typically carried out include the removal of asbestos debris and residue, encapsulation of walls, ceilings, asbestos cement sheets and environmental cleans.

Previous works have included the removal and disposal of the asbestos insulation and associated debris within the floor voids of the air traffic control tower. The floor voids contained data cabling vital to the operations of the airport which remained fully operational during our works.

We were also heavily involved with the new terminal project, consisting of the removal of all asbestos within the former departures building prior to its demolition.

Following further investigations at the pre-planning stage, circa 1,800m2 of Asbestos Insulating Board (AIB) panels were also identified, in the rear frame housing of the façade, forming part of the original fabric of the building. This was also included as a part of Shield’s scope of removal.

The project ran from July 2021 through to December 2023.
